Many of you have concerns about transportation:

  • No driver’s license
  • No car
  • Cost of gas
  • Environmental factors
  • Vehicle reliability

Did you know that there are several options for transportation?  I would like to direct you first to the transportation page of the UNCA website:  Click Here

Getting Around

At UNC-Asheville, we strive to cultivate sustainable, safe, and healthy habits within our community. This includes promoting alternative transportation methods (also known a multi-modal transportation) such as carpooling, bicycling and walking. Our campus contains walking trails, a bike shop, as well as connecting to a walk-able green way from Merrimon Ave. that leads all the way to Downtown Asheville. Public Safety funds a Ride Sharing board and provides free rides on city transit buses.

Our mission doesn’t stop at multi-modal transportation. Transportation Services also offers regular Travel-Safe programs, providing car inspections, advice, and free car-safety giveaways.

Campus Transportation

In addition to offering campus shuttles for transportation on campus and to nearby apartment buildings during the week, the Transportation Department offers an evening shuttle service which provides on-demand rides to nearby apartment complexes, North Asheville grocery stores (Ingles, Trader Joe’s, and Harris Teeter), and pharmacies (CVS).

Area Transportation

The university is serviced by the City of Asheville public transit system. Bus rides are free to university students and employees through the “Passport Program.” See the Public Transit page for more info.

Students needing to rent a vehicle for more than a day may receive discounts from Enterprise Rent A Car with a special discount code.

Students without access to other transportation are also provided with a number of free taxi vouchers. Students can request emergency rides back to campus, or request taxis for medical appointments with off-campus providers. See the Emergency & Medical Rides page for more info.

Regional Transportation

Students are also offered a range of services for accessing regional transportation, including scheduled shuttles to the Asheville Regional Airport for scheduled breaks and at the end of each semester.
