$1956.35 Segal Education Award for Participation

This is an OPTIONAL opportunity to be a part of a national community service program during your time student teaching through UNCA. Project POWER is an AmeriCorps program through Children First Communities in schools of Buncombe county. The belief behind this program is that students, schools and communities will thrive when provided resources and support. Our goal is through our work we improve attendance, engagement and increase high-school graduation rates and expand college enrollment. UNCA Students who will student teach in Asheville City, Buncombe, Madison or Henderson Counties might be eligible to receive an education award through this three-month commitment that can be completed during your time student teaching. If you are interested, talk with Rebecca Bodenheimer about it during your meeting or the AmeriCorps contact Catherine Saunders (CatherineS@childrenfirstbc.org) for whom you will submit the application.

Education Award Process

The education award is like a bank account that the individual gains access to once they successfully complete their term. Successful completion must include:

  • Completing their hour requirement (this is never an issue for student teachers because they are in the classroom for many more hours than are required for their AmeriCorps term)
  • submitting timesheets on time
  • submitting 2 data sets (one at the beginning and one at the end). ADD MORE INFO HERE

Once the member successfully completes their term and are successfully exited, they can access their education award through their MyAmeriCorps portal (they set this up when they enroll). This money is available for 7 years and can be used for any accredited education expense whether that is paying tuition directly or using the money to pay off student loans they already incurred while attending an accredited program.
